This winter has been a bit weird in the Lake Anna area, one day its 15 degrees and the next is 60 degrees. But that’s Virginia weather in a nutshell. Regardless of how the temperature is, we are still in the winter season, and we still have more cold days to come. Although landscaping is not something that is thought about in the winter months, the truth is that this is the time when you should be preparing your lawn for Spring.

So what kind of things should you do for your landscape in the winter?

  1. Keep Watering the Plants: Just because it is not hot and dry does not mean that you have to forget about watering your plants or lawn. Neglecting to water them can bring issues like disease. watering lawn
  2. Rake the Leaves and Keep the Grass Short: Raking is not just for the end of fall. Leaving the leaves on your lawn can mix with snow and cause mold. The leaves will also prevent the sun from reaching the grass which will result in less growth. Keeping the grass short (1-2 inches shorter than usual) will also help in preventing snow mold.
  3. Winterize Your Sprinkler System: Winterizing your sprinkler system consists of forcing compressed air to push out accumulated water. Doing this will prevent damage to your system and your lawn.
  4. Use Mulch: Did you know that mulch can protect your roots against frost? Indeed it does! Place mulch on your tree beds and in your garden!mulch on flower beds
